Lasers 101

Laser technology has evolved greatly over the past ten years. Particularly exciting are the non-ablative (non-invasive) treatments available.

The laser is not a magic wand. Its important for patients to have realistic expectations about what lasers can and cant do. The laser can treat many of the skins imperfections, such as spider veins, dark discolorations, sun damage, fine to moderate wrinkles. Several treatments are often necessary for optimal results and some imperfections are not treatable.

Lasers are part of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Unlike ordinary light that comes from different sources and has various wavelengths that scatters in many directions, laser is a controlled uniform output of light energy.

When medically applied the laser is a versatile modality for the treatment of skin disease and imperfections.

There are many lasers and each one has a different medical application.

1) The KTP is a laser that heats up and coagulates blood vessels for the treatment of:

• port wine stains
• rosacea
• spider veins
• angiomas

2) The ND:Yag is a Laser that emits a green light is for the treatment of pigment within the skin, such as:

3) There has been a breakthrough in laser treatments for hair reduction. New laser technology reduces hair growth by disabling the hair follicle. It is beneficial for those who have unwanted hair growth on the face or back. It is estimated that five percent of women suffer from Hirsutism, which is unwanted facial hair growth.

Pseudofolliculitis is a common problem among men, aka razor burn. This is when the hair becomes trapped with in the follicle or curly hair grows back into the skin, sometimes causing a severe infection.

4) Photo rejuvenation is the latest is a non-invasive (non-ablative) treatment to tone, firm and stimulate collagen synthesis. There is a high demand for non-invasive treatments, meaning minimal or no down time.

This laser penetrates through the skin leaving it intact to stimulate fibroblasts for collagen synthesis. The results are toned, firmer, youthful looking skin. In addition, it will treat rosacea, spider veins, dark age spots and sun damage.

Its also beneficial for other parts of the body such as, the neck, chest and hands.
