Winter sports are fun and great exercise, however the high altitude and dryer climates can be detrimental to the condition of the skin. It is essential to protect and maintain healthy skin by taking the following steps:
-
Use gentle cleansers for bathing. I don't recommend deodorant soap, as they can be too harsh. Instead try *Aveeno bar, Basis, or Purpose. Bathe with warm water hot temperatures can be too drying for the skin.
-
Moisturize after bathing while the skin is still moist. Try *Neutrogena's Sesame oil, lac-Hydrin or St. Ives spray moisturizer, especially great for hard-to-reach areas.
-
Proper clothing is the best protection when outside, but for the areas that are exposed to the elements, apply moisturizers with a sunscreen or sunblock. Try *Oil of Olay Pro-vital with zinc oxide, for the face, or Shade UVA Guard, by Coppertone. When active, apply sun protection every two hours.
-
Due to a lack of oil glands and pigment, LIPS require an extra dose of protection. Carry a lip balm with you and apply frequently. Suggestions: *Banana Boat sunblock balm or Eucalyptus medicated stick with sunscreen, from the Body Shop.
-
Avoid the urge to jump into the hot spa or hot shower directly from the cold outdoors, as this can cause broken capillaries. Warm up gradually.
-
Lastly, don't forget to drink extra fluids. After all, moisturizing the skin begins on the inside.
