Articles Mexoryl: A Newly FDA Approved Sunscreen Ingredient
Mexoryl the new sunscreen ingredient to help guard against the harmful effects of UVA has finally won FDA approval.
Many have been awaiting the arrival of a sunscreen with the ingredient Mexoryl, the trade name for Ecamsule, for many years.
Mexoryl has been available in Europe, Asia, Latin America and Canada since 1993.
What is so special about this ingredient is that it is photo-stable, meaning it does not break down or degrade after exposure to the sun. Until now, the best ingredients for broad spectrum protection have been Parsol 1789 (avobenzone), zinc oxide, and titanium dioxide. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are physical blocks, which deflect UVA/UVB and provide broad-spectrum protection. Parsol on the other hand is a chemical block, which absorbs the suns rays. The problem with Parsol is that it degrades resulting in minimal protection after several hours.
How to find it: Sunscreen with Mexoryl, under the trade names Anthelios or Vichy will soon be available for purchase in the United States, until then it can be purchased by visiting the following web sites:
